Who we are
ethdns is a private, non-commercial project run by its administrators. It does not sell services to the public. This page describes how we handle legal matters in practice. It is not a contract and does not create obligations beyond those the law already places on us.
Legal matters go to legal@ethdns.com. Copyright notices go there too.
Third-party content
In everything we run ourselves, we stay within the law and common ethical norms, and we oppose violations wherever we meet them. We cannot, however, take responsibility for the actions of third parties.
Projects of third parties on our network are published by their owners, who are responsible for what they publish. We are not the publisher of that content and we do not review it before it goes online. When we receive a credible notice about it, we act as described below.
Copyright notices
If you believe material on a host of ours infringes your copyright, send a notice that includes:
- the work you believe is infringed, described precisely enough to identify it;
- the exact URL of each item you want removed. “The whole site” is rarely precise enough;
- your name, postal address and email address;
- a statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by the owner, its agent or the law;
- a statement that the information in the notice is accurate and that you are the owner of the rights or are authorised to act for the owner;
- your signature. A typed full name is enough.
What we do with it:
- We check that the notice is complete. Incomplete notices get one reply explaining what is missing.
- We pass it to the owner of the project and ask them to remove the material or to respond.
- We restrict access to the material if the owner does not respond within a reasonable time, or if the infringement is obvious.
- We tell you what was done.
We do not decide who is right in a legal dispute. We make sure that both sides are heard, and we act on clear cases. Projects that infringe again and again lose their place on our network.
If a notice concerns you
If you run a project here and received a notice through us that you believe is mistaken, reply to us with an explanation: why the material is yours, licensed or lawfully used. We forward your answer to the sender of the notice. If the sender does not pursue the matter, the material can be restored.
Trademarks and domain names
Complaints about the use of a trademark on a site go to legal@ and are handled like copyright notices. Disputes over who should own a domain name are decided by the registrar and by dispute resolution procedures such as the UDRP, not by us. We will, however, forward your message to the owner of a project we host.
Personal data
What this website collects, and how to ask about data we hold, is described on the Privacy page. Requests about personal data go to legal@ as well.
For personal data inside a third-party project, contact the owner of that project first: they decide what is collected and why. If you cannot reach them, write to legal@ and we will pass your request on.
Requests from authorities
Requests from courts, police and other authorities go to legal@. Please send them from an official address and include:
- the name of the authority and of the person responsible;
- the legal basis of the request and its reference number;
- exactly what is requested, and for which period;
- the deadline, and how to confirm that the request is genuine.
We verify every request through official channels before answering. We respond to requests that are valid and correctly addressed, and only with what is required. Unless the law or the request forbids it, we may inform the person concerned.
Danger to life. If a request concerns an immediate threat to someone’s life or safety, put EMERGENCY at the start of the subject line. Such requests are read first.
Use of this website
The information on this site is provided as is. We keep it accurate and current, but we give no warranty about it, and it is not a legal commitment. Links to other websites are provided for convenience; we are not responsible for their content.
The texts and images of this site belong to ethdns. You are welcome to quote our texts with a link to the source.
Names and logos of other companies and products are trademarks of their owners. We use them only to say which products and services we use or know, in a single neutral colour to match the page. This does not imply any affiliation with their owners or endorsement by them. Some of these companies and products have changed owners or names over time; we are aware of it and use the names under which the market knows them, as a common standard. If you represent a trademark owner and would like us to show your mark differently or remove it, write to legal@ethdns.com and we will do it promptly.
We work in English. Requests in other languages may take longer, because we will need to translate them first.
